Moving Guide - Moving Overseas

Taxes
International tax laws may differ from what you are used to. You may have many deductible moving expenses or have your new income taxed. Before moving abroad, explore what you will be taxed for and if there are any international tax treaties between the United States and your new country. Refer to these tips as a starting point:
  • U.S. citizens must report their total income on their income tax returns; moving overseas does not exempt you from filing tax returns.
  • Working and living abroad may qualify you for tax deductions, so keep track of your moving expenses and spending. Refer to IRS Taxpayer Guide or Publication 776 for more information on taxes for U.S. citizens moving abroad.
  • If you are relocating abroad for business your paycheck may be taxed so inquire about what you are exempt and non-exempt from.
